Jurgen Klinsmann would pick up the phone if Stuttgart were to call, his agent, Roland Eitel, told SWR amid reports of a Bundesliga return for the former United States head coach.

Having started the campaign with high hopes, Stuttgart sacked their coach Tayfun Korkut in October following a slow start. But instead of turning around the club’s fate, new boss Markus Weinzierl started his reign with three defeats, conceding 11 goals and scoring none.

Stuttgart are joint last in the Bundesliga standings and sporting executive Michael Reschke has come under fire, leading to reports that Klinsmann may return to his hometown club — something that the 54-year-old’s agent has not played down.

“Jurgen Klinsmann would always pick up the phone if VfB Stuttgart were on the line,” Eitel said.

However, Eitel added that Klinsmann would only consider a coaching role at international level.

In recent weeks, Klinsmann said in several interviews in German media that he was getting closer to returning to football, but he ruled out taking over a national team which is not capable of reaching the World Cup semifinals.

Klinsmann, who has been out of work since he was sacked as the United States coach during their failed World Cup qualifying campaign, said that he could also consider working as a sporting director.

With Stuttgart’s fate currently in Reschke’s hands, local outlet Stuttgarter Zeitung said earlier this week that Klinsmann could either replace Reschke or get a more strategic position at the club where he made his name as a world class attacker in the 1980s.
